I would like to introduce Verbatim, software used around the country by policy debaters at the Middle School, High School and College level, to a wider audience of educators because it offers uniquely useful features. Verbatim, used in conjunction with Microsoft Word, is designed to assist someone putting together a speech quickly by allowing vast amounts of "cutting and pasting" without the strain on the "clipboard memory" of Microsoft Word and by providing the creator with an exact time estimate based on the number of words in their document and the speaking speed they select. For teachers who are trying to teach students in any sort of speaking activity, the ability to estimate and edit based on the time estimate is very useful. However beyond that basic application, Verbatim has some unique features for archiving audio material, emailing documents, organizing large numbers of files, searching those files, arranging document windows, etc. Verbatim offers a wide range of quick key functions that circumvent many of the slow and annoying quirks of Microsoft Word and is therefore useful for educators and students who use Word.
